El calendario festivo de Algeciras comienza el día 5 de enero, el día de la noche reyes. Todos los 5 de enero todos los algecireños nos tiramos a la calle, a disfrutar de nuestra ciudad, a ver las caras de felicidad de nuestros pequeños, y sobretodo, salimos a la calle para atraer a Sus Majestades de Oriente.

Y se preguntaran... ¿Qué tienen que ver las latas con los Reyes Magos? Pues bien, ahí dos teorias sobre esta famosísima tardición algecireña. Unos cuentan que hace muchos años, la situación económica y social de la ciudad era tan negativa que los padres dijeron a sus hijos que los Reyes Magos no pasarían por Algeciras, pero los pequeños, agudizando el ingenio, hicieron acopio de cacerolas y latas que ataron para arrastrarlas y atraer de esa manera a Melchor, Gaspar y Baltasar para que les dejasen sus regalos.
Otros dice que en Algeciras habitó un gigante, de nombre Botafuegos, que no quería que los niños tuviesen regalos, y para ello, encendió una gran hoguera cuya humareda cubrió la ciudad impidiendo que se viese a lo lejos, aunque una vez más, los protagonistas de la fiesta se las ingeniaron para guiar a Sus Majestades de Oriente a través del ruido.
En este día tan especial en nuestra localidad, también se celebra un certamen en el que pequeños y mayores compiten por la mejor escultura hecha con latas. Hay figuras impresionantes y que la verdad llevan mucho trabajo y esfuerzo a sus espaldas, pero merece la pena. Porque... ¿Qué hay mejor que estar paseando por el centro de tu ciudad viendo miles de sonrisas?

De una manera u otra, ese día, Algeciras forma una estampa como no hay otra igual, con miles de niños, muchos de ellos llegados desde otras poblaciones cercanas, que esperan con esa alegría la llegada de los Reyes Magos por mar.

The festive calendar of Algeciras begins on the 5th of January, the day of the three Kings. Every 5th of January all of the people of Algeciras go out to the street to enjoy our city and to see the happy faces of the small children, and, above all, to attract their Majesties of the East.
"THOUSANDS OF CHILDREN TRAVEL THE STREETS OF OUR CITY TO ATTRACT THE ATTENTION OF THE THREE WISE MEN WITH THE DIN OF THEIR CANS"
You might ask... What do cans have to do with the three wise men? Well, there are two theories about this famous tradition. One theory is that many years ago, the economic and social situation of the city was so bad that parents told their children that the three wise men would not pass by Algeciras, so the small children tied together big collections of pans and cans to drag around the city and so, with that noise, draw Melchor, Gaspar and Baltasar to Algeciras to give their gifts to them.
The other theory is that in Algeciras there lived a giant, named Botafuegos, who did not want children to have gifts, and that, because of this, he lit a big fire whose smoke covered the entire city to prevent the kings from coming. But, once again, the protagonists of the party (the children) managed to guide their Majesties to Algeciras through noise.
On this special day in our town, we also hold a contest in which young and old compete for the best sculpture made with cans. There are some impressive figures and the truth is that it takes a lot work and effort to build these, but it is worth it because there is nothing better than to walk around one's city surrounded by smiles.
Either way, that day in Algeciras paints a picture unlike any other, with thousands of children, many of them from other nearby towns, joyfully awaiting the arrival of the three kings by sea.
